If you want to live in the center of everything Chicago has to offer, you should consider living in one of the conveniently located Streeterville apartments that are now in high demand. This neighborhood is considered the area that is just north of the Chicago River, east of Michigan Avenue, west of Lake Michigan and Navy Pier, and South of Lake Michigan again (as the lake curves around Lake Shore Drive). As one of the more appealing areas in Chicagoland, it is ironic that the land itself is actually a reclaimed landfill and sandbar.
This neighborhood is partially in-demand because it is filled with well-reputed hotels, an assortment of restaurants, medical centers, academic establishments, professional office spaces, and residential towers. Both the John Hancock building and the Chicago water tower are historic components of the city and are located in this neighborhood. Although the area had first seen major growth after World Wars I and II, Streeterville has seen growth and increased demand with the turn of the century. Because of this demand Streeterville apartments are all the rage amongst local renters.
The history behind this area (aside from the landfill part) is quite unique. The neighborhood itself is names after George Streeter, who in the 1880’s tried to take Chicago shoreline from its true ownership. His methods were unscrupulous as he lied, stole, and killed in his attempts.
Prior to the physical development of this area, maps showed that just north of the Chicago River, Lake Michigan ran all the way up to what is now Michigan Avenue. Where the river met the lake a 1,500-foot pier was constructed. It was at this site that sand and silt began to gather, and eventually a permanent land mass formed that was aptly referred to as the Sands. Through the years there were many debates about the rightful ownership and what the intent for the development for this area should be. It wasn’t until the 1920’s with the development of high-end housing and upscale shopping that the neighborhood truly began to thrive.
This land although once in debate has now become some of the most desirable real estate in all of Chicagoland. In near proximity to the Loop, Chicago’s central business district, and steps away from Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, Streeterville has a lot to offer potential residents. Many who reside in this location walk to work and yet find refuge in the quality and convenience of life that is offered. To truly experience the city living in center of the action has not substitute.
